Interdisciplinary PhD

Engineering Psychology and Human Factors are studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the context of the Interdisciplinary Program in Human Factors (IPHF). This effort, originally called the Engineering Psychology Joint Program, was established in the early 1980's is a currently cooperative arrangement between the following campus units:

Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering
Department of Mechanical Science and Engineeing
Institute of Aviation
Computer Science

Faculty members within the program usually have cross-appointments between the above campus units. Courses at both undergraduate and graduate level are often cross-listed between the units.

The IPHF at University of Illinois is associated with the following very general research strengths:

aviation psychology
cognitive and perceptual human factors
cognitive engineering
engineering psychology
human operator in process control
human-computer interaction
visualization

The Administrator of the IPHF is Dr. Alex Kirlik.
